Improving housing data in the US helped to offset negative market sentiment caused by continued concern over political and economic instability in Greece. However, as the trading session wore on, it became apparent that investors had little appetite for riskier assets and most markets closed near session lows.

Better-than-expected New York manufacturing data highlighted a spate of positive pre-market news releases that helped to offset broader global market concerns over the immediate political and economic future of Greece. After the US markets opened however, we noted that trading became quite volatile as the $DX climbed to session highs, and put downward pressure on the the stock index, currency, and commodity markets.

Continued political instability in Greece, and a slowdown in China's economy, conspired to create negative sentiment coming into the open of the US trading session. Fallout from JPMorgan's hedge fund losses was also dragging on the markets, as light volume and volatility ruled the day.

JPMorgan surprises everyone by announcing a $2-4 billion loss in hedge fund derivative trading activities, and casts a negative sentiment on the markets heading into open. Futures were moving higher on better-than-expected jobless claims, and as a result, the markets saw an opening gap up for the first time this week. After all the extreme moves we have seen over the past few days, we expected the markets to calm down a bit and be less volatile.

Weekend elections in France and Greece dealt a blow to the incumbents and created even more uncertainty around how the European Union will deal with its mounting sovereign debt crisis. As a result, the markets were selling off in active overnight trading as we approached the open of the US trading session.

Although the US unemployment rate dropped to 8.1%, the number of new jobs created was less than expected and sent the markets into a selling frenzy. This gave us some much needed volatility and several trading opportunities to consider.
