For years I have been telling traders to use the KISS principle when selecting a trading strategy - Keep It Safe & Simple. To this point, I have decided to publish a Simple Day Trading Strategy that I have been using in my own trading. Here are the key things you need to know:
- This is a non-proprietary strategy. The Simple Day Trading Strategy is a trend-following strategy that uses common indicators to identify market direction (MACD) and the best market entry point (Bollinger Bands).
- Can be used on a variety of futures markets. Trading multiple markets is one of the keys to building trading success and the Simple Day Trading Strategy can be used to trade most financial, foreign exchange and commodity markets.
- Works with most charting software applications. Whether you are using Trade Navigator, Ninja Trader, Trade Station, eSignal or other popular charting packages, the Simple Day Trading Strategy can be used to work for you.
- Most importantly, it’s simple to learn and easy to use. Using colored bars and easy-to-understand indicators, the Simple Day Trading Strategy clearly identifies market trends and potential entries you can act on with confidence.

To Trading Than Just Having A Successful Strategy
I have learned the hard way that there is no such thing as a “sure thing” when it comes to trading strategies. At their best, trading strategies are still only tools that are most effective when used by discretionary traders. There are many external factors that need to be considered before executing a trade, despite the presence of a strong technical entry signal. Here are a few discretionary tips all traders should know:
- The morning session is the best time to trade. The first two hours after the markets open tend to provide the liquidity and volatility necessary to spot the best trend-following trading opportunities.
- Be careful of major news events. Nothing can impact the markets like a scheduled economic release that reports news that is different than what the market expected. Pay attention to these events and give them a wide berth when considering a trade.
- Keep an eye on major support and resistance. Make sure you plot the previous day’s high and low prices on your charts and be careful entering into any trade that may breach these key support and resistance levels.
- Look to correlated markets for confirmation. Some markets are correlated to the point that they trend in the same or opposite directions and this can provide the discretionary trader with a helpful confirmation signal when considering a trade.
- Keep your emotions in check. From being too timid to enter the market and too aggressive to know when to stop trading, fear and greed are the two most destructive emotional forces that confront every trader - and these emotions must be controlled.
