When you see the ads, you will see private jets, fancy yachts in turquoise water, huge mansions with infinity pools and exotic cars parked in front of them
You hear about these trades that made 853% in just a few days.
You read the “testimonials” about how people grew their accounts from 5,000 to several million.
You see all of this and even though you’re not a “flashy” person, these ads manipulate your subconscious and you will think to yourself, “I want that.”
And so you begin your journey into the world of trading.
You quickly realize that it is not as easy as it looks. In fact, it might be one of the most difficult things you have ever tried to do.
But here’s the real kicker
Often you will notice that there are very few people who will support you.
If you tell people around you that you’re trading, they might tell you that you’re never going to make it and that you should just give up now.
So the odds are stacked against you:
- You are up against the market, which is a completely unknown entity that can do whatever it wants, whenever it wants
- You are up against yourself and your own emotions, which can be your worst enemy
- And you are up against other people who don’t believe that you can make it
But you are determined, and against all these odds, you decide to go for it.
You watch videos, invest in tools, … maybe you even trade on a simulator first.
You put in the hours because you are determined to “make it”
After you placed some trades, there are 2 possible outcomes:
You make some money
You think to yourself: “It’s working! I think I can do this.”
You might tell your friends about your success.
But to your surprise, they are not celebrating with you. They say: “It’s just a few trades. You got lucky. Just wait for it: You’ll lose money in the long run.”
Another possible outcome after a few trades is that…
You lose some money
Now you might think to yourself: “Ok, it IS difficult. Maybe THEY were right.”
And if you tell your friends about your experience, they will say: “See? I told you.”
This can be a very discouraging experience, and it might make you want to give up.
It almost seems that whatever you do,
You can’t win
How’s THAT for a motivational speech? – LOL
Wait for it… it DOES get better. I promise!
Let me give you a 3 step approach to set you up for success:
1. Stay Committed
Make a promise to yourself: “I am determined to make it as a trader, I will not give up.”
That’s what I did after I lost 60% of my account in 2002, just a few months after I moved to the US to become a trader.
Learn from your mistakes, continue to educate yourself, find a mentor and grow your account.
2. Don’t listen to the naysayers
The people who are telling you that you can’t make it, are usually the people who have never tried. Or they tried for a little bit and then gave up.
And the people who tell you that you got lucky with a few trades… well, they are the cynical people. Those are people who don’t take risks.
Those are people who stay in their comfort zone. Those are the people who see the glass half-empty and just like to complain about things.
So don’t listen to them!
3. Surround yourself with people who want you to succeed
Find people who are supportive.
Find people who KNOW what it’s like to be a trader.
Find people who will encourage you after you made a mistake or had some losses.
Find people who will help you to get back up after the markets knocked you down.
Find people who celebrate successes with you.
Find people who are genuinely happy when you have some success – no matter how big or small.
Trading is difficult
And without the right people around you, …
But let me ask you this:
Do you think you will be more successful when you are surrounded by people who tell you “You can’t do it!” or if you are surrounded by people who say: “You CAN do it. Let me help you and show you how?”
I personally only like to surround myself with people who believe in me and who inspire me. People who support me no matter what.
And I have a very strict “No a**hole” policy in my life.
But that’s a story for another day 🙂
Stay positive, stay determined, and surround yourself with people who support you!
